8/27/2023 0 Comments Bass harbor weatherThere are still ebbs and flows, but it seems to be getting better by the day. Go enjoy our fishery as it starts to come into its own. This makes sense since the beach fishing on that side of the island is so good. Lastly, in the last few days, Old Man and Pochick have started to fill in as well. We have seen fish fill into the edges on the west end, and plenty of fish in the open water crashing bait. We have squid, big sand eels and small herring in the mix. The surfcaster ran down to where Brook told him to go and hooked a big fish on his first cast.īoat fishing has also been fantastic over the last week. He rode the wave all of the way into the beach and told a surfcaster who was just down the beach. He then caught a wave and rode over a big school of bass. He was surfing in the Cisco area and while sitting on his board, he saw a big bass come full out of the water to ambush a baitfish. My favorite story from this week was from Brook Meerbergen. These fish are generally in bigger schools and moving in and out from the beach. In fact, I was swimming with my kids at Fisherman’s the other day (yep, it was chilly) and there were fish in the waves. More attention has been focused around Cisco but Fisherman’s and Madaket are each holding a lot of fish. The south shore continues to be productive and relatively predictable. During the day, this is the time of year when you start to hear of anglers catching a dozen blues from the beach in a frenzy midday. As a beach fisherman, taking in the sunsets with bass rolling on the north shore will be awesome for the next few weeks. There is a ton of bait, a lot of moving water and plenty of depth for these fish to operate. The water has warmed up enough to have bass and bluefish spending extended periods of time on the north shore. If you like to throw a fly, this is my favorite time of year and favorite location on Nantucket to be fly-fishing. I love targeting these fish with soft baits or smaller top-water plugs. The lower-light periods will still be extremely productive for the next few weeks. While it is fishing really well right now, I expect the midday fishery that has been so productive in there for a few weeks to slowly retreat as we continue to have the beautiful days. The harbor is right around 63 degrees and almost at the point where it might be getting a little warm for bass. These fish are filling into the north shore and are populating Madaket and Nantucket harbors. He was fishing the flats and at times felt as though he was going to get knocked off his paddleboard with the schools of fish that were moving in around him. Then, as I was cruising back into the harbor, I received a call from a friend, Pat McEvoy. I knew it was happening when I found a pile of birds on the west end and hammered bass and blues under it for an hour. I get reports the harbor went off “last night” with bass all over the surface and then the next day I hear about a boat load of bass in Madaket Harbor. The excitement could be anywhere and that is what our fishery feels like right now. Once the child can run around and do stairs, watch out. Eventually that baby starts to crawl, which causes excitement, but we are still not in full stride.Įventually the child starts to walk and the excitement is overwhelming but they still have not hit full stride yet. Doting parents are waiting for the moment for probably too long. Our fishery tends to evolve like a baby learning to walk. (June 1, 2023) Our fishery woke up over the last week and man has it been fun.
